Our EDI work

Our mission

To embrace diversity and inclusiveness across the research continuum to develop solutions that make care safer for all.

Our vision

To create a team culture that embraces diversity and inclusiveness and embeds these principles throughout our research. We will identify, co-create and deliver high quality safety solutions with our patient and staff communities to benefit the lives of all, including members of protected groups+(see note 1).

Our key operating principle

To be intentional and accountable in making EDI everyone’s business.

Our goals

  • To continue to build an inclusive and diverse team culture where everyone is enabled to contribute safely and equally fostering a sense of belonging that enhances our ways of working to fulfil our EDI mission.
  • To grow skills and confidence to embed and enact the principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion throughout the whole research process.
  • To create and deliver culturally responsible, meaningful, and impactful safety solutions with and for communities who are most likely to be harmed or feel unsafe when accessing, receiving, or delivering care.
  • To develop sustainable and inclusive relationships with our local communities (patients and carers, public and health and social care staff) and organisations that are built on reciprocity and trust.

EQUITY, DIVERSITY & INCLUSION: HOW MATURE ARE WE AS AN TEAM?

EDI Maturity Model diagram

In July 2024 we used the NIHR SafetyNet EDI Maturity Model SafetyNet | SafetyNet EDI Maturity Model (nihr.ac.uk) to assess the maturity of our team. See below (Who we are) for information about the diversity of our team. 42 people took part in the survey out of 65 that were invited.

We are ADVANCING.  We identified particular strengths in leadership and where individuals felt that they could be themselves in the workplace. We also acknowledge key areas for development in relation to skills & knowledge for embedding EDI within research, managing team concerns and conflict, and raising the voices of marginalised groups within and outside the team. We will use these findings to reflect on our EDI strategy and its delivery plans over time.

Who we are

We did not collect demographic details from our team at the time of running the EDI maturity assessment however we have information on the diversity of our team through a survey conducted in the previous month which included 22 members of staff.  We present this as a brief summary to avoid identifying staff. Although our team are mostly base in Yorkshire and the Humber we do have team members from across England.  Ethnic diversity in our team is similar to the general UK population with approximately 18% of our team identifying as being from Black, Asian and minoritised ethnic groups.  We are under representative of younger (ages up to 24 years) and older (than 60 years) people. The proportion of our team with physical or mental health conditions or illness was just greater than that seen across the UK.  We mostly identify as female, heterosexual and generally working as professionals or managerial level roles. Gaps in our team represent some limitations in lived experiences across these groups which we acknowledge in our research.

The EDI Maturity Model was generated by research funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research and led by SafetyNet, representing the Patient Safety Research Collaborations of Yorkshire and the Humber, Manchester, North West London, West Midlands, Newcastle and Central London.©Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, 2024.  All rights reserved.
